Будущие кроссоверы Volkswagen: сразу четыре модели!

Премьера нового Туарега в Пекине оказалась интереснее, чем ожидалось. Помимо нового флагмана, Volkswagen показал сразу четыре новых кроссовера! Правда, все они ориентированы в первую очередь на китайский рынок и пока имеют статус концепта-каров. Три из них скрывают интерьер за тонированными стеклами, а два вообще пока не имеют названий. Что же это за машины?

Volkswagen T-Roc для Китая

Раньше других на рынок выйдет китайский Volkswagen T-Roc: сборка на совместном предприятии FAW-Volkswagen начнется уже в июле. На первый взгляд это тот же автомобиль, что еще прошлым летом дебютировал в Европе, но вариант для КНР длиннее. Колесная база для удобства задних пассажиров растянута на 77 мм (до 2680 мм), а общая длина стала больше на 84 мм (4318 мм).

Volkswagen T-Roc для Китая

От европейской гаммы моторов не останется и следа. Китайский T-Roc будут оснащать турбочетверкой 1.4 TSI (150 л.с.) прошлого поколения, в пару ей положен семиступенчатый «робот» DSG. Ожидается как передний привод в комплекте с полузависимой задней подвеской, так и полноприводная модификация с многорычажкой.

Volkswagen Powerful Family SUV

Но в Китае у Тирока будет и внутренний конкурент: его показали под условным названием Volkswagen Powerful Family SUV, а производством займется другое совместное предприятие, уже с концерном SAIC. Даже беглого взгляда достаточно, чтобы узнать в этой машине кроссовер Skoda Karoq! Точнее, его китайскую версию, которая на 50 мм длиннее европейской. Судя по всему, это и есть будущий глобальный Volkswagen Tharu, который впоследствии начнут выпускать в том числе и в России.

Пластика боковин, форма бокового остекления, двери — все это такое же, как у Шкоды, а отличается только оформление передка и кормы, причем дизайнеры не поскупились на полное изменение лица, не ограничившись лишь пластиковым оперением. Фары светодиодные, а зеркала теперь установлены на отдельных ножках. Подробностей о технике пока нет, но велика вероятность, что серийный Volkswagen Powerful Family SUV унаследует агрегаты Карока: в Китае это турбомоторы 1.2 TSI (116 л.с.) и 1.4 TSI (150 л.с.) плюс семиступенчатый «робот» DSG.

Volkswagen Advanced Mid-Size SUV

Третий концепт называется Volkswagen Advanced Mid- Size SUV (он изображен на главном фото). Обещанный пятиместный Atlas/Teramont? Простое сличение фотографий с недавним тизером выявляет немало отличий: у китайской машины иное крепление зеркал, дверные ручки расположены под поясным ребром, а не на нем, иначе оформлены бампер и решетка радиатора… Но общий стиль с массивными колесными арками один и тот же! Поэтому не исключено, что укороченные версии Терамонта для США и Китая будут отличаться гораздо сильнее, чем донорские семиместные машины.

Так или иначе, по размерам Volkswagen Advanced Mid- Size SUV сопоставим с длиннобазным Тигуаном, который в Китае называется Tiguan L. Это значит, что длина превысит 4,7 м. Выпускать новый кроссовер будет СП FAW-Volkswagen, тогда как локальный Tiguan L делает SAIC. Другие подробности появятся позже: Advanced Mid- Size SUV, равно как и Powerful Family SUV, должны стать серийными до конца 2018 года.

Ну а сам Volkswagen Tiguan L обзавелся гибридной модификацией, причем Китай стал первой страной, где она поступит в продажу уже этим летом. Представленный в Пекине автомобиль с приставкой PHEV унаследовал силовой агрегат концепта Tiguan GTE: бензиновый мотор 1.4 TSI работает в паре с двумя электродвигателями, а их суммарная мощность достигает примерно 220 л.с. (точный показатель объявят позже). Тяговую батарею можно заряжать от розетки. Из визуальных отличий версии PHEV — иные бамперы и синий декор. Впоследствии гибридный Tiguan должен появиться и на других рынках, хотя в России его не будет.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Volkswagen has been touting its late-to-the-party mid-size three-row SUV, to be built alongside the Passat in Chattanooga, for years now. A concept version called the CrossBlue first appeared three and a half years ago. But now, it’s finally real, and we’ve just driven a preproduction prototype of the company’s answer to the Ford Explorer and the Toyota Highlander. One reason it has taken so long is that the Tennessee factory had to be expanded and equipped for this North America–focused machine. We also toured the plant where test cars are now being assembled. Full production is expected to start in mid-December, with the SUV appearing in dealerships early in the second quarter of 2017 as a 2018 model.

You’ll notice we haven’t named this SUV yet. That’s because VW has yet to do so. Officials said they have a name in mind and clarified that the SUV will wear a different name in North America, its primary market, than it will in export form. VW said it was negotiating with another automaker on a name; reading between the lines, it could be that the badge they want for our model is an out-of-use trademark.

Built on VW’s MQB platform, the production model retains a character line running the full length of the vehicle above the wheels, but it’s less accentuated than it was on the Cross Coupe GTE concept—a follow-up to the original CrossBlue—that was displayed at the 2015 Detroit auto show. The distinctive line looks better than it did when overstated on the concept and is probably easier to produce for the sheetmetal supplier Gestamp, which is co-located at the Chattanooga industrial park surrounding VW’s factory. The car we drove was camouflaged on both ends, but we saw the complete body-in-white and, briefly, one finished and uncovered vehicle during our factory tour. In stance and dimensions, it resembles the Ford Explorer but with Passat-like details and cues.

Also different from the concept is the D-pillar/liftgate portion, which is more upright, as expected. The liftgate opens conventionally with a release above the license plate, rather than employing a swiveling VW badge as both the release mechanism and handle in the clever manner of the Golf’s hatchback. We couldn’t open the liftgate on our drive because the camo interfered, but it had a power-operated lift mechanism that kicked in when we tried the release.

Getting into It

Entry to the driver’s seat is via an easy, carlike motion, much like getting into a Toyota Highlander, with less of a step up than is required for the Explorer. The example we drove was a V-6–powered all-wheel-drive model, and our experience was limited to gravel roads and an excursion onto groomed off-roading trails in Tennessee’s Prentice Cooper State Forest, about 45 minutes away from the factory. The base model will be front-wheel drive with VW’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which makes 200 horsepower in the smaller Tiguan; the car we drove had the 3.6-liter narrow-angle V-6, which generates 280 horses in today’s Touareg and Passat. VW hasn’t released final power ratings for this application, but we don’t expect them to vary far from those figures. We anticipate zero-to-60-mph times will be in the low-eight-second range with the four and in the low sevens for the V-6. In comparison, the Explorer’s top engine, a 365-hp 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6, delivers 60 mph from a stop in six seconds flat, while the Highlander’s naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 does the deed in 7.3 seconds (we have yet to test the 2017 Highlander with its updated V-6). The Ford and Toyota SUVs are the top sellers in the segment and VW’s primary targets, although for driving pleasure we prefer the Dodge Durango and the Mazda CX-9. VW is leaving the door open to a possible diesel variant of its new SUV, but those might all be left to export markets. More likely is a hybrid in later model years, but officials would not indicate whether they had in mind a conventional hybrid like that used in the Toyota Highlander or a plug-in like the one VW showed in that 2015 concept. If we had to put money down, we’d bet on the latter.

Seen side by side, VW’s new three-row vehicle looks only a little larger than the Touareg, but it is much more spacious inside, largely because the engine is mounted transversely (it’s longitudinal in the Touareg). The one we drove had a 60/40 split-folding second-row bench seat and eight-passenger capacity; we expect VW also will offer center-row captain’s chairs for a seven-seat configuration, given that its primary competitors do so. The new VW also is meant to sell at prices closer to the heart of the U.S. market for such large crossovers, starting in the $30K range where the Touareg has been hampered by being a more premium vehicle with stickers typically in the $50K neighborhood. VW will continue to offer the Touareg in America, but its hopes for expanded sales volumes rest in this new model. It will be joined on the lower end by a long-wheelbase, three-row version of the new Tiguan and, in some future model year, by an even smaller crossover. The current two-row Tiguan may continue alongside the new, longer one until that smaller vehicle is ready.

The new SUV (it will be easier to keep this all straight when it gets a name) has a Passat-inspired instrument panel and a flat-bottomed steering wheel with controls for the IP’s center-mounted information screen and audio system. It all looked like standard MQB hardware, but most of the rectilinear dashboard was camouflaged, and we never saw the infotainment system display at its center.

Driving the Whatever It’s Called

A console-mounted dial offers selections among all-wheel-drive modes: Snow, Sport, On-Road, and Off-Road; the latter is customizable, presumably via a touchscreen menu, and we were told it had been set up specifically for our drive on the trail through the forest. As in the Golf-based Alltrack wagon we also sampled briefly on these gravel roads, the all-wheel-drive system is on-demand most of the time, sending torque to the rear axle only in low-traction situations. In these pavement-free circumstances, we never got to experience it in front-wheel-drive mode, although we did manage a mile or two of 45 to 50 mph in Sport mode, which tightens steering response and amends the throttle and transmission programming.

On the gravel roads, the vehicle we drove felt solid, quiet, and smooth in operation with comfortable seating and with good sightlines outward, excepting only the rear quarters, where the windows were partially covered by camouflage. Acceleration was more than sufficient for the conditions and felt on par with or a little better than a Highlander, but not as vigorous as that of the Ford Explorer Sport—just as you might expect. Steering and handling reminded us immediately of the Passat, while the brakes felt strong.

On the off-road trails through the woods, the all-wheel-drive system performed well, and the vehicle exhibited long, supple suspension travel, which is useful in rough terrain. The trail didn’t present any challenges that had us wishing for the greater abilities of a trail-rated Jeep, but it was more extreme than most owners will ever attempt and narrow enough to drive the parking sensors nuts with warning beeps as we progressed at appropriately cautious speeds. The suspension height is not adjustable, and while hill-descent control worked well and appropriately in response to brake and throttle inputs, there’s no button to engage it on command. This is not a vehicle for dedicated off-road adventurers, but like several others in the segment, it performed beyond our modest expectations.

In other respects, too, VW seems to be on target. For instance, the center bench reclines, and it also folds forward and slides to ease entry to the third row from either side, with a cleverly designed release handle atop the seatback that can be flipped forward or backward to simplify use from outside or from behind the seat. There’s room enough to leave an empty child safety seat installed in the second row while folding the seat forward to access the third row. And both back rows can be folded flat for an expansive cargo hold. A tall adult can sit in the wayback seats with the center row slid forward one notch from its rearmost position, which also leaves enough legroom for a six-footer in the middle row. Cargo space behind the third row looks ample for a family-size load of groceries and not as cramped as in some three-row SUVs, although, as noted earlier, we couldn’t open that liftgate and had to eyeball it from the seat side.

What’s new for 2021: For 2021, the VW has refreshed the Atlas with new front and rear styling that adds almost 3 inches to its overall length. Under the skin, a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is now available for the first time in AWD models.

The top trim levels of the Atlas — the SEL Premium, for example — can now be ordered with the 4-cylinder, which isn’t quite as powerful as the V6 but offers better fuel economy. Moreover, VW’s driver-assistance features have been refined, and the latest in-car telematics system provides improved response.

Onboard Wi-Fi is available on all 2021 VW Atlas models, while a larger 8-in touchscreen is standard on all but the base model.

Features and technology: The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas comes in three trims, the S, SE, and SEL. The base model S gets the 4-cylinder engine as standard and comes with cruise control and a safety suite with automatic emergency braking.

Step up to the SE, and you get optional access to the V6 engine and the SE with Technology model, which adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The SEL comes in a couple of variants, including the SEL R-Line. That version gets 12-inch wheels and R-line body trim. At the SEL trim, you get access to VW’s stellar digital cockpit feature that shows up in some of Volkswagen’s sister brands (Audi). At the Atlas SE level, you can add the captain’s chairs for the back seat, as well. All versions get optional AWD.

The Atlas has a tow rating (when equipped with the tow package) of 5,000 pounds. Otherwise, it tows only 2,000 pounds.

What does the future hold? As SUVs boom, the Atlas will likely continue to stick around and get refreshes.

2021 Subaru Ascent

What we like: Great outward visibility, standard AWD, lots of driver aids included, IIHS Top Safety Pick+

What we would change: Make the accident-avoidance tech less annoying, and smooth out the throttle response.

Overview: The Subaru Ascent features many of the brand’s traditional elements, including standard AWD, boxer engines, good visibility, and strong value, in a larger form. Compared with the Outback, the Ascent is 5.5 inches longer in wheelbase and overall, allowing space for a standard third-row seat. In all three rows, the passenger room is good, and luggage space is, too, although the 17.6 cubic feet aft of the third row is merely average. Big windows provide a good view for the driver and keep passengers from feeling claustrophobic.

The Ascent only gets one engine, a turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer four that provides gutsy acceleration and good fuel economy. Sadly, it’s paired with a CVT, and accelerator response can be nonlinear. The AWD system includes X-Mode with hill-descent control, which combines with an impressive 8.7 inches of ground clearance to let the Ascent wander far off-pavement.

What’s new for 2021: For 2021, Subaru adds steering-responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beams to all trims. A standard rear-seat reminder function is also new.

Features and technology: The 2021 Subaru Ascent is offered in base, Premium, Limited, and Touring trim levels. All models include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. That’s a strong list, but their excessive bleating might tempt some drivers to switch them off.

The base car also includes Apple AAPL, +0.13% CarPlay, Android Auto, four USB ports, roof rails, and a bench second-row seat. The Premium adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. It also upgrades the infotainment system from a 6.5-inch touchscreen to an 8-inch unit.

Second-row captain’s chairs can be had here, and further options include a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, and navigation. The Limited’s niceties include leather, a heated steering wheel, heating for the front and rear seats, and a memory function for the power driver’s seat.

The Touring exclusives include a rear camera mirror and a front-view camera, plus unique exterior trim.

What does the future hold? The Ascent is only in its third model year, but we could see Subaru porting over the extra-large 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen from the Legacy/Outback at some point.

Come spring of this year, Volkswagen finally fills a missing spot in its lineup. Up to now the luxury Touareg has been the company’s largest offering. No longer. Welcome the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, the company’s first three-row midsize SUV.

The base model of the Atlas comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, good for 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. However, at a Volkswagen-sponsored press drive outside of San Antonio, Texas, I got to sample the 3.6-liter V6, as the smaller engine will arrive later this year. This larger power plant puts out 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard across the line, with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system optional on V6 models only. Power defaults to the front wheels, but when slippage is detected up to 50 percent of the torque can be thrown to the rear wheels.

The Volkswagen Atlas: three rows of affordable utility.

I was surprised at the sturdy handling of the Atlas. Its footprint is big and the all-wheel drive version weighs in at just over 4,500 pounds. Still, it handled the twisty back roads of Texas hill country with ease. Although the eight-speed automatic transmission can be a bit hesitant to downshift, I solved that problem by operating it manually from the gearshift.

The Atlas has a few drive modes that adjust engine, transmission and steering response as well as the adaptive cruise control system. Eco keeps things placid for the best fuel economy, but aside from steering, which is frighteningly light and vague in normal mode, it’s tough to tell the difference between Normal and Sport. The Sport mode kicks the acceleration up a notch while adaptive cruise control is engaged, arriving to the predetermined following distance quicker. Presumably, this behavior will keep other drivers from cutting in front of you in low-speed situations, but there really wasn’t enough traffic on my drive to try it out. There is also a Snow mode that reduces engine power when the sensors detect wheel slip, and both an Offroad and a Custom Offroad setting.

There seemed to be a fair amount of wind noise coming off the side mirrors during my Texas excursion, and in my SE trim tester there was an intermittent rattling from the passenger-side HVAC vent. However, the SEL Premium trim car I drove later displayed no annoying vibration.

Concept-inspired

Evolved from the CrossBlue concept we first saw in 2013 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Atlas looks quite a bit like its inspiration. Volkswagen added fog lights to the front fascia, a new style line runs down the side (and unfortunately right through the gas-filler door), and the available LED taillights have lost a bit of their verve. Like the concept, it remains a nice-looking, albeit boxy, vehicle. At about 16 and a half feet, the Atlas matches the Ford Explorer in overall length and is a bit more than the Honda Pilot.

Oy, that wood paneling.

The cabin contains some unfortunate plastic-looking wood trim, but if that’s the worst thing I can say about it, VW must be doing something right. There is seating for seven adults, although the optional second-row captain’s chairs take that capacity down to six. Those second-row seats can tilt and fold for easy access to the third row, and they also slide forward almost 8 inches, giving riders in the way back a bit more room.

Cargo capacity for the Atlas hits the middle for the segment. Behind the first row there is 96.8 cubic feet of space, with 55.5 behind the second row and 20.6 behind the third row. The Chevrolet Traverse , the Atlas’ largest competitor, unsurprisingly has the most cargo space, but the Atlas still beats the Ford Explorer, Mazda CX-9 and Toyota Highlander in this regard.

Volkswagen estimates fuel economy on the front-wheel drive V6 to be 18 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway and 20 combined, with numbers a bit lower for all-wheel drive. Fuel economy on the 2.0-liter engine has not yet been announced.

The lowest trim line, the S, comes standard with LED headlights and daytime running lights as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A relatively small 6.5-inch touchscreen is also standard. While the SE trim gets an 8-inch touchscreen and blind spot monitoring, it’s not until you get to the SE with Technology that more driver’s aids kick in. Here you’ll get forward collision warning with brake assist and pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, and lane keeping assist. The SEL ups the ante with park distance control and a towing package good for 5,000 pounds. The top of the line SEL Premium goes all out with LED taillights, automatic parallel and perpendicular parking, a special Fender 12-speaker premium audio system and the super-cool Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas: Big, bold and just a bit boxy

Inspired by Audi’s Virtual Cockpit , the Digital Cockpit on the Atlas is a fully customizable 12.3-inch screen in place of the instrument cluster. It can display a variety of information between each virtual gauge, like audio or fuel economy, or you can go supertechy and display the digital map. Once you experience it, you’ll wonder why you ever thought it was OK to avert your eyes to a center infotainment screen to look at the map. Unfortunately, the only way to get it is to shell out $48,490 (gulp!) for the SEL Premium, as this feature is not offered as an option.

VW’s Car-Net is standard across all trim lines, so even the least expensive Atlas still has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the SE and above, VW makes a security and service telematics package standard. This tech gives drivers remote access to their vehicles as well as emergency assistance and a program designed to monitor the speed and location of young drivers. However, it’s not quite as robust as GM’s OnStar system with its Teen Driver functionality. Those wanting navigation with real time traffic and weather reports from SiriusXM will have to spring for the SEL Premium.

Volkswagen is offering very few options on the Atlas which will only be available on the upper trim lines. You can replace the second-row bench seat with captain’s chairs, opt for a sporty R-Line appearance package or throw some 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels on your Atlas.

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas will be available in May of this year with the 3.6-liter engine. Availability of the 2.0-liter engine has not been announced, but it will start at $30,500. To be honest I was rooting for this vehicle and it’s heartening to see VW swinging the bat. The company is desperate to renew its reputation in the North American market, and the Atlas might just be the vehicle to do it. The weight of the world is indeed on its shoulders.
